Weekly Note

First Grade Weekly Note 

September 5, 2019

Christ Light- We praise God that he has rescued us from the flood of our sin just as he saved Noah and his family. Please read “The Tower of Babel”
tonight. We talked about God’s Plan vs Our Plan(s).   

Our hymn of the week is “Speak O Lord.”

Reading Street- Our theme this week was “Who helps pets?” We also discussed plot: problem and solution.
We read and wrote animal fantasy stories. 

Amazing Words (vocabulary)- tool, career, service, scrub, exercise, and sloppy.

The spelling test is tomorrow. The words are on the homework chart. Please help your child learn a few challenge words if
she/he already knows the basic list of 10 well. 

Chrysalises- We are still keeping watch this week. 

Seesaw- Pictures are up and will keep coming. Thanks for logging in last week.

Science- We started a Pond Life Unit. We enjoyed reading and watching a video on beavers. Today we considered living and non-living
things at the pond and next week we will learn more about pond plants and animals. The book “Over and Under the Pond” by
Kate Messner was my inspiration for this fun unit! 

Reading Assessments Mrs. Keifenheim and I are doing reading assessments this week and next with every student to determine
reading levels. I will begin sending home leveled readers next week 1-2 times a week. 

September calendar A September calendar is being sent home, too, on the back.  

Scholastic Book Orders I will send Book Order catalogs home a few times a year. You may purchase books at very reasonable
prices, but do not feel obligated. Books make great gifts, too. Order online with the code GVM93 or simply return the slip and payment.     

Kids A-Z Has your child told you about our Kids A-Z app. When they have a turn for ipads, they go to a digital library with 20 books about their reading level. They 1) listen to each book, 2) read each book and 3) take a quiz on each book. Once they have completed those steps successfully with each book, they advance to the next level. The books are fiction and non-fiction and very engaging. You may access your child’s account at home or make it an “at school” app. :)
