First Grade Weekly Note August 27, 2020 1st Week! Yay. It is so good to be back in school. I am not taking any moment for granted. Christ Light- “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son...” What a blessing to start each school day with Christ. Great job reading and reviewing our Christ Light stories at home. May God draw us ever closer to Him through the study of His unchanging Word. Read-a-loud We have enjoyed three books in class this week. Ask about “Wild about Books” and the animals that got a Zoobrary! “First Grade, Here I Come” is about a mouse comparing his kindergarten year to his new first grade year. Ask about the comparisons. Finally, we loved reading “Fun Dog, Sun Dog.” Ask what is the Maverick connection? Reading Street- I am starting our year with two weeks of review to get our brains back on track and confident for our year ahead. We are practicing basic phonics (consonant sounds) and diving into reading simple sentences with engaging illustrations in our (soft cover) text. Check out our Amazing Words (vocabulary) on the Homework Chart. They may be too tricky for us to read, but we have learned what they mean. Is your child able to read the high frequency words (also on the chart)? Math We have learned some new math meeting routines and have reviewed the numerals 1-5. Independent Math Stations at our desk 1) Assemble a puzzle 2) Create a design with pattern blocks, 3) Domino addition math 4) Decorate two masks with a fabric marker. Science We have been thinking like scientists this week. 1) How do we use our 5 senses to observe God’s creation? 2) What tools do scientists use? 3) How does a scientist solve problems or answer questions? (Intro to the scientific method). See Seesaw for our science experiment with apples today. What helped them not turn brown? Did you hear about my lab coat? I want to share my science excitement! Remember- No school next Friday or Monday for Labor Day!
