New Baby Today!

Welcome to Mrs. Guell's  little girl,  Nora Jane.  She was born a day after her Mommy's birthday.  Both are doing well.  We cannot wait to meet her.

Bible:   We learned of Johnathan and Saul's death.  No  Memory Treasure.

Reading and Science:   We combined reading and science today and did lots more work in our Weather Unit.

Math:  109 today.  Our new lesson was to put (divide) items into groups.

Birthday/Easter and New Baby Treat!  Thank you, Mrs. G!!!  They were delicious.  

We ended our day with "I Know That My Redeemer Lives"  Happy Easter (a bit earlier, just in case we don't have school tomorrow).

Tuesday

Bible:   Review of David Shows Kindness to Saul.  We reviewed Eph 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other,  just as in Christ  God forgave you.  That verse is right on our Classroom  Rule chart.  May HE be our motivation for forgiving and sharing kindness each day.

Superkids:   We reread A Super Hiding Spot.  Most charts were signed today.  Thanks.  We also practiced our spelling and phonics, took a spelling test and answered comprehension questions that go with the story.

Math:  Lesson 108  Greater than, Less than and Equal to were the new topics of today.

Science:  I made a cloud!  Ask about our experiment.  We also did some pages in our weather journal.

English:  We reviewed singular and plural.

Monday

Bible:  Read 4A tonight.  David Shows Kindness to Saul.  May we be filled with love and compassion for our neighbors!  MT  Eph 4:32  Be kind and compassionate... (see chart).

Reading:  Read "A Super Hiding Spot"

Math:  Lesson 109  We used pattern blocks to make 1/2  1/3 and 1/6.

Science:  Our weather unit continues.  Tomorrow we will do some more experiments.

Ms. Rachel Haugly joined our class for the day to get some experience with first graders.  She plays softball at MLC so I had her play whiffle ball in the gym.    Everyone batted and ran the bases.  We also did more tumbling.  What fun!

Friday


What a fun day!  We started our day in chapel.   Pastor Haugly shared the Palm Sunday story and reminded us of the many opportunities we have to worship God in our lives.  He is our King!

We practiced our Palm  Sunday song.  Be here at 7:30 this Sunday.  The kids will sing in late, too.

Mr. Markgraf shared a presentation about MLC with the whole student body.

We took a math test and wrote thoughtful thank you cards to Mr. M.  He shared his two lip-dubs.  Fun!

The Preschool Circus was just adorable!!!

We ended our day with a Rainy  Day Art  project.

Thursday

Bible:  Today we reviewed the Friendship of David and Johnathan.  May we be Christian friends to all God places in our lives.  Jesus, our loving best friend, fills us with the power and peace we need.

Superkids:  We reviewed our pattern words.   We also used our spelling words to play a game in the workbook.  Mr.  Markgraf was impressed with how well  we worked in pairs around the room.  

Math:   Lesson 106  More +9 fact work.  Side B  due tomorrow.

English:  Today we reviewed singular and plural.  Everyone wrote a weather poem, too.

Science:  We read about clouds and observed the clouds outside.

Everyone took a book home to read tonight.  :)   Preschool circus is tomorrow.   Your child may bring 2-3 quarters for popcorn and/or a prize.

Wednesday



Bible:  Mr. Markgraf shared the Bible Lesson today.  David and Johnathan.  We also practiced the 8th Comm.   It is on the homework chart.  

Reading: We read a short story in Superkids.  I did not send it home, because it was so short.   Everyone was sent home with another book to read and the reading log to sign.  Thanks.  We are working hard on our r-controlled vowels, too.  

Science:   What a great day to study the wind.   We caught the wind in our bags, too.  Mr. M read a few "Wind" books, too.  The kids were excited to talk about tornadoes.  

Math:  Lesson  105 today.  We started the +9 facts.  The kids are loving the math stations. We tried to finish lesson 105 in class so it need not be returned tomorrow.

Tuesday

Good afternoon!  Did you hear it was Bubble Gum Day in class?  We chewed away and let our bubble gum inspire our writing.  "One day my teacher gave me a piece of bubble gum..."

Bible:  We reviewed David and Goliath and discussed how God has defeated our greatest enemy, Satan.   The kids recited the MT.

Superkids:  The story "Fire" was read by most last night.   Thanks for signing the homework chart.  Tonight library books were sent home. We reviewed the story in class and practiced our spelling words, too.

Math: Lesson  104  Ask about measuring into the room (from the door to the end of the counter).   First we measured with  Aidan's feet (29 feet), then Mr. Markgraf's.    The same distance was 19 of his feet.  His foot (with shoe) was very close to a "standard" foot.

Science:  Temperature.    The kids were excited to have thermometers and move them between cups of hot water and icy cold water.  How fun to watch the "mercury" go up in the hot water (to 100 degrees) and down near 40 degrees in the cold water. Ask if your child remembers "At what temperature does water freeze?"

Monday

Good afternoon! Mr. Markgraf joined our class today.  He mainly observed today and worked with kids one-on-one as needed.  He is especially excited about listening to and helping us read, write and spell.  I will try to get a photo up soon.  He will do some classroom teaching as the week goes on.
     
We had a very productive day.  The children enjoyed the Bible lesson about David and Goliath.  Read 3A tonight.  The Memory Treasure is on the homework chart.  We even sang it.

Reading:  We read the Superkids story "Fire" today.  Please have your child read it at home.

Math:  Our new vocabulary words were "dozen" and "half dozen."  We did lesson 103.  It is due tomorrow.

Science: We finished our Solid, Liquid  and Gas unit and began our Weather unit.  Tomorrow we will discuss temperature and thermometers.

Thursday!

Bible: Devotion with 8th grader and review of Saul Disobeys God.

Superkids:  We started our new unit today.  Our new words will have the r controlled vowel spellings.  Ar, ur, er, and or.

Math:  Today we began doing 10- ... Math facts.  The kids are enjoying our station, too.

Science:  Ask about our coffee experiment with solid, liquids and gas.  We also measured the "mass" of three objects with cubes.

English:  Singular and plural were new today!

Book orders were sent home.  Stock up for spring and summer reading.

Tuesday

Good evening!

We had a terrific day in first grade.

Bible: Review of Samuel Anoints Saul.   Then we sang our MT and even added instruments.  Maybe you have heard the song at home.  "We love..."

Reading:  We reviewed our story, "Rex King'sVisit" and  discussed What happened? (Effect) and Why did that happen? (Cause).  We also reviewed our spelling words and did pages in the workbook.  Spelling Test tomorrow.

Math:  We reviewed and will  take a test tomorrow.   The kids enjoyed our new math stations.  1) ipads for our new app Xtramath.  I will send home info this week.   I loved day #1 with it!!!  2)  More Measuring  3) Math card/fact games   4) Make 10 Fact Family Page.

Science:  Today we studies"liquids."  Our new science word was "properties."  I gave each child  a mini item from class.  They had to write down several ways to describe it, its  properties.  Then I read cards one at a time, and the rest of us had to figure out which item  was being described.   The kids wrote so much!

Everyone spent 3rd recess jumping rope.  We had so much fun!

I made sure everyone had a new library book to read tonight.  Sign the Reading Log, too.  Thanks.  

Our classroom supply of kleenex is used up.  I would like everyone to bring in one box.  Thanks.

Bible:   2A   Samuel Anoints Saul  MT  I John 4:19  We sang and clapped to it today.  

Superkids:  New story "Rex King's Visit"  Please read it in the text book and sign the reading log.

Math:  Lesson  99  Counting nickels and pennies.

Science:  Matter- Solids today.  

I have updated the Kids A-Z reading levels.  Your child should have new books to read/listen to and take quizzes on.

Baby Shower Day


It was Baby Shower Day today in first grade.    We celebrated with a Jesus Little Lamb cake from Noah's Mom,Nicole Pierquet.  We enjoyed popcorn and juice, too.  Our games included Baby Word Unscramble,  and Estimate the Candies in a Bottle.  The actual was 46 and Thomas had guessed 49!   Way to go.     We also measured Mrs. Guell's belly with a string and then measured the string.  38 inches!  ;)  The kids all wrote a page for a Class Baby Book.  It will be full of advice like "feed your baby" and baby memories like "I liked my silky blanket when I was a baby."  THANK YOU for the  many gifts.  Mrs. G is certainly feeling the love of Christ through you.

Chapel:   Pastor Parsons shared the story of the  Prodigal son. At times we are like the son  that wandered away.  At other times we are like the jealous son.   May we remember our Father who runs to us in love,  showers  us with forgiveness and reminds us we are His dear child.

Reading:  We reviewed our spelling words and phonics words.   In the wkbk we reviewed Play Ball details and story sequence.

Math:  Lesson 98 and practice counting money with nickels.

We are singing in church for late service on Sunday in place of the  Psalm.  Meet in my class at 10:15.   We will walk in together and sing and then your child will sit by you.

Wednesday

Happy Dr. Seuss Day.
We celebrated in a few different ways in first grade.  1)  We made Thing 1-25 hats.  I think they are adorable.  I also wore a Cat Hat.  2)  I made real GREEN EGGS at lunch and offered everyone a spoonful.  About half were takers.  The rest said "I do not like green eggs."  3) Everyone enjoyed the Dr. Seuss Book station.  There was a lot of reading going on in the library with our 4 Big Sisters from 6-8th grade.

Bible:  We learned about Eli and His Wicked Sons.  Eph 6:1 is the memory treasure.  It is on the homework chart.  

Superkids:  We read Play Ball in the text book.  Have your child read it tonight.

Math:  Lesson 96 today.  We reviewed congruent shapes and practiced our Make 10 facts some more.
Science:  Our word today was "classify"  The kids cut out 16 different pictures and "classified" in a way they chose.  It was fun to share the different ideas.

We ended the day with 3 stations 1) ipads for Reading A-Z 2) Dr. Seuss books and 3) Reading Superkids.

Tuesday

Good evening,

We had a fun day at school.  God decided to send another "Snow Day!"   When we were not busy learning inside, we were outside enjoying it.

Bible:  We reviewed Hannah and Samuel and took time to appreciate the Christian training our parents give us.  We also appreciate our parents' prayers.  Today we prayed for you, too.  We are working hard on our song for Sunday.  It is sounding lovely.

Superkids:  We started our new words spelled with the -aw and -all.  We used the Smart Board to write various words going up a ladder.  The kids are doing independent reading during DEAR time,  too.

Math:  Test today.   No homework.  The kids enjoyed using  small OR large paper clips to measure.  "You can't use small and large clips when measuring," I told them.  :)  

Science:  We learned and practiced a new word today "observe" as we begin to work like real scientists.  Ask about the two buttons and two plants.

Oops- sorry, I forgot to send home the March calendar.  I was in and out two times to assist my  husband.   He had a medical procedure and is now home recovering.  The kids enjoyed a LONG indoor recess with  Mrs. M.  :)
