Wednesday

Happy long weekend kids!

It has been wonderful to meet you all during these conferences.  Thank you for coming in.  May our discussions be beneficial for your child as we train him/her up in our Savior.

REMEMBER:  The whole school sings this Sunday for Reformation.  Be here by 7:30.  The kids will march in with the class and then sit with you after they sing.  We sing at 10:30, too.

Tuesday:  We reviewed our Bible lesson and used the hymn A Mighty Fortress for our devotion theme.  The kids loved diving into their hymnal for the first time.  Many were able to follow along well.   We sang verse 1 and 4 several times.  Can't wait to sing it in worship on Sunday.

We reviewed Superkids for handwriting and spelling.  The kids also wrote about a time when they were "in a pickle" and how they got out of it.  What fun to share with the class.  Check for it in the binder.

THANK YOU BELLA and MRS MONROE for the treats.  We had a Fall celebration in my backyard on Tuesday with the homemade apple bars and creepy spider treats.

See you for our Reformation Celebration on Sunday.

Monday

Good  evening!

Bible:  Today Joseph's Brothers Came to Egypt.  God is using this time to test their faith and sorrow over sin.  Joseph kept his identity a secret.  Read 10B.  It was exciting to tell the kids.  I told them they could read ahead for the fabulous ending!   NO MEMORY Treasure to recite, though we did practice Eph 3:20 at school.  "God can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine."  He certainly did for Joseph.

Superkids:  We reviewed Unit 4 and finished our workbook.  You will see some of our writing samples at the conferences.

Math:  39B.   Ask about the 4 items we weighed.  We measured in "pennies" balance our scale.

Windy City Players were here from Chicago.  They acted out the Emperors New Clothes.  It was a funny tale with audience participation mixed in.

Blessings.  I look forward to meeting with you all.

Friday

It was a fabulous Friday!  This morning we had a guest in class.  Joey is a friend of Noah P (since 4K).  He fit right in and may join our class!

Chapel:  Pastor Parsons led a fantastic devotion about The Church, God's house.  He compared going to God's house to going to a Packer game.  Packer fans go to see their hero Aaron.  Fans want to be filled with the sights and sounds of the game.  May we come to church with even greater joy as we worship our hero Jesus.  May the sounds of our hymns and the sight of other believers encourage us on our journey to heaven.  See you in church!!!

Superkids:  We practiced reading and spelling our words more.  We took our test.  No book bags this weekend.  We read our poems, too.  We will share these at Family Literacy Night Nov. 6.

Math:  We made a graph with our pattern blocks.  Do lesson 38.

Raking:  What fun to hit the neighborhood.  I bet our school raked about 50 bags of leaves!  My neighbor, which is where my team went,  was shocked and grateful for the service.

Report Cards: They were sent home today.  I look forward to talking to each of you at conferences next week.

Blessings this weekend.

Thursday

Good afternoon.   Volleyball is over, so my posts will be earlier!

The class started the day by writing cards for Mrs. Kemnitz.  Wow.  The verses they chose and the words they wrote will certainly bring joy and peace to Sharon, not to mention tears!  Sweet.

We reviewed our Bible lesson,  Joseph is Made a Ruler.  God certainly worked all things for good!  The kids recited their memory treasure.  Those 5 who said it perfectly, earned a shiny sticker.

Superkids:  We reread Golly Went Sniffing.  We practiced our spelling words a lot, too.  We read pattern words and did lots with spelling and writing.  Spelling Test tomorrow.

Writing: The kids did a lovely job writing a sensory poem.  Read it in their workbook when it comes home next week.  Ask about it tonight.  I like __________.  I see __________.  I hear ________...

Math: Lesson 37.  We did more practice with  "+1."  This afternoon we did one round of math stations, too.

Leveled readers:  Another book was sent home.  We practiced that in groups, too.  Great job reading daily!

Wednesday

Here are the highlights of our day.

Bible:  Life is finally beginning to look up for Joseph.  Ask about the crazy dreams God helped him interpret for Pharaoh.  Then Pharaoh made Joseph in charge of taking care of the looming problem for Egypt.  God used J is amazing ways.

Reading:  Please use the flashcards in the  money pouch to practice reading and spelling the words.  We wrote some words on the back, too.  TEST is Friday.  We read a fun poem,  Golly Went Sniffing.  The kids also enjoyed more fall poems.   We also practiced our leveled readers today.  Read them tonight.

Math:  We started our easy addition.  +1  Do lesson 36 tonight.  New math stations today!  Ask about them.

I began reading a chapter book, Junie B Jones, in preparation for our field trip to Appleton.

11 boys and I had a blast at lunch  recess.  I am the all-time QB.  The group tries to catch it.  If a boy catches it, he has to run around the soccer goal.  Our "record" was 6 boys running at once!  We did this yesterday, too.  What a hoot!

Tuesday

We had a fun busy day.

Bible: Review.  Some kids were the characters and acted the lesson out for us.  We discussed God's FAITHFULNESS to Joseph and to us.  May we also grow daily in the Word, be filled with Jesus' love and be faithful to Him in our words and actions.

Reading: We read more from our Superkids book and practiced -er and -ed words.  We also discussed the story characters, problem and solution.

Math: We took a test today.  No homework.  We also measured many things with cubes.  Our Job chart was 60 cubes.  I was 92 cubes tall.   The kids measured their desk width and length.

Leveled  Readers were sent home in the book bags.

Have a great evening.

Monday

Welcome to a new week.  We also have a new seating arrangement.  Ask about it!

Bible:  Joseph had to endure yet another trial.  Read lesson 9B.  Our Bible  verse is Gen 39:9  We played a game to help us learn the verse.  I cut out the words of the verse and 12 kids each took a word.  We  arranged them in the verse.  Then the other 12 kids took a turn.

Math: Lesson  35B  Thanks for bringing in pictures about morning, afternoon, evening and night.  We discussed these three times of the day.

Superkids:  We reviewed our Memory Words and read "In a Pickle."  That is the homework tonight.  NO ZIPLOC baggies.

Social Studies: We read a few more pages in our big book to introduce the subject.

Math stations:  We made our final round today.  I will set up new ones.

Friday

The beautiful pumpkin art projects are drying on the rug.  Can't wait to hang them.

Chapel:  Thanks Mr.  H for a music-filled devotion as we considered God's  gift of music.  The Faith  band students each played a few seconds on their instrument, too, so we heard several new ones.

Superkids:  We read and spelled our new words.   We also listened to and read a short story by Tic and Cass.  Then, we read and  sorted nouns and verbs.  Finally, we made silly sentences using nouns and verbs drawn from a box.  We also added adverbs.  "Sour pickles ran slowly."  "Mice jumped wildly."

Math:  Less 34B is homework.  We practiced more with our doubles, and "plus one" problems.

Spanish:  Today we started learning the  months of the year and started working on a Spanish Months  and Days crossword puzzle.

No ziploc book bags (leveled readers) were sent home.

Have an awesome weekend.  I look forward to seeing my brother.  He is flying in from  Washington, DC.  My siblings and parents will all gather to help him celebrate his 40th bday.

Thursday

Greetings!

This is a picture of Noah and Eli working in the  Place  Value station.  The sticks have a 10 side and a 1 side.  We shake the sticks, dump them and look at how they land.   We count the tens and ones and make numbers.  It has been awesome to see the "lightbulbs" go on with this math station.

Morning Work: The class wrote beautiful cards for Mrs. Monroe's Mother.  She is quite sick.

Bible: Review of Joseph and his brothers.

Reading: New Unit started today.  Unit 4 with -er words and -ed words.

Math: Some, some went away problems.  Minus!  Less 33B  is homework.

Book Bags were sent home.  Library books were sent home.  Happy reading.

My Weekly Note was sent home.  A field trip permission slip was also sent home  about the play at WLA in early Nov.

Get better soon, Mara.  We prayed for you.

Wednesday

This post is delayed.  I had volleyball after school.  Sorry.

It was a great day.   We continued our lesson on Jacob and Joseph.   The kids were saddened and shocked how Joseph was treated by his brothers.  Read 9A tonight.  Mt 26:41 is the memory treasure.
Superkids:  We reviewed our  poem  and memory words.  We played "Hang Mouse" on the smartboard to review, too.  This afternoon we had our spelling test. We will start Unit 4 tomorrow!

Math: Today we manipulated cubes and added 1 (+1) cube to our tower.  Each day we review the doubles.  I am really trying to get the kids confident in mental math and not relying on "finger counting."  We enjoyed math stations, too.  Do  lesson 32.

Gym: Half the  group did kickball with Mrs. G.  I had half for the parachute.  We had to take advantage of this great weather.  Music with Mrs.  H, too.  We are getting our song ready for the Reformation service.

In social studies, we began our unit on citizenship.

Happy reading tonight.

Tuesday

We had an  awesome day.  We reviewed Jacob Returns.  How comforting to remember God is only a prayer away for us, too.  The kids did great on their Memory Treasure.

Superkids:  We reviewed our poem, Super-Scrub-A-Matic.  It was so fun to sing it and tap rhythym sticks while we said it to a beat.  We also reviewed our memory words for the TEST tomorrow.  We wrote and illustrated our own poem, too.

Special Guests: Mr. Herkstroeter and his job shadow student from WLA, Joe Herrewig, both read a humorous story to us.

Math: We reviewed the shape names (trapezoid and parallelogram are the hardest).  We did set 31B.  In math stations we reviewed the doubles facts.

Have a great evening.

Monday

It was an eventful day in first grade.

In morning meeting,  I always like to hear about everyone's weekend.

Bible:  We continued our story of Jacob.  He returned to his brother Esau,  the land God promised to  his family.  He trusted God to be with him.   What joy to see his father, Isaac, too.

Superkids: We read our new poem, Super Scrub-a-Matic.  What fun.  We also discussed the repetition and sequence of events.  Please review the  Memory Words.   The test is Wed.

Math:  We did a variety of math activities today.  A fact sheet is the homework. Keep working on doubles.

Science:  We did a final day of our animal unit.    Tomorrow we will take a final assessment and begin our new unit in SS on Citizenship.

New books were sent home in the ziplocs today.  Thanks for having your child read it and (you) sign it.

Friday!

Good afternoon!
We had an eventful day.  Thanks to Mr. Walta (5th grade teacher) for leading us in chapel this morning.  He encouraged us to be empathetic, consider the feelings and needs of others.  How awesome that Christ had empathy for us and took care of our greatest need, forgiveness.

Math: Test.  No homework.

Superkids: More work with our Spelling words  (have, how, show, a, do,  me and pattern words -le and -ng).  We also reread the Scrambled States of America and completed a story map about the characters, problem and solution.  Ask about that silly book.

We made a guest appearance in Faith's Friday morning Bible class.  We all made cards for Pastor Witte (who leads the class).  He is having health complications.  We also sang our song and played bells (#13-24). It was lovely and the group (mainly retired seniors) were delighted.  Pastor Witte has some lovely reading material and was deeply touched.

Library Books were sent home, but I kept the leveled reader book bags for the weekend.

Happy Birthday Rowan and  Jackson.  We loved the treats today!!!

Thank you, Mrs. Feltes, for helping this am as Mrs. Guell accompanied her son on the field  trip to Madison.

We danced to a fun song in Spanish as a way to review body parts.  We also learned some basic greetings.

We began an awesome pumpkin project in art.  Can't  wait to finish next Friday!

Thursday!

Good afternoon!

The  Weekly Note was sent home today.   Let me know if your child did not get it to you.  The  Faith Alive was also sent digitally.

Bible: We reviewed the story Jacob and Laban.  Our new word today was "greedy."  Laban was greedy for more possessions and that is partly why he wanted Jacob to keep working for him.  God did bless Jacob.  God richly blesses us with all we need, too.  Tomorrow is chapel!

Superkids:  We reread Fiddlesticks.   So many kids wanted to read aloud today.  I know most practiced last night.  Thank you!  They did a great job.  We did  more spelling and writing, too.

Math: I showed my balance scale and we weighed several containers.  We talked about "heavier and lighter" objects.  Lesson 29 is due tomorrow.

Science:  We reviewed animal groups as some kids are still a bit confused as to how to group animals.  I read more from our First Encyclopedia of Animals.  What great facts and photos.  Finally, we read and discussed "food chains."

Today we enjoyed our math stations in the morning and two reading stations in the afternoon.  New leveled readers were sent home.  Happy listening as your child reads!

Our guest speaker, Amy Baehr, talked about dealing with anger.  We made a squishy ball with a balloon and playdough to squeeze real tight when we are feeling angry.

Tuesday

Bible: We reviewed Jacob's  Dream.  He broke many Commandments when he sinned and took his brother's birthright.  We rejoiced that God  does not keep a  record of our sins.  They are forgiven!!!  In his dream, God told Jacob the blessing of the Savior is still his as well as the large family and the land. We also discussed what a "conscience" is, the little voice that tells us when we have done wrong, broken God's law.
The kids all said their Memory Treasure.

Superkids:  We did more work with -ng and -le words.  You should use the list and word cards in the money pouch to practice at home.  Read and spell them!

Math: We did more work with doubles today.  Ask about the new math stations.  Fun and great practice.

Friendship Week; Today professional counselor, Sara Riek, spoke to the student body.  She had a wonderful presentation about how to be a good friend.  We saw some great videos, too.  I liked the catchy phrase "Talk, Walk or Buddy Up" when being bullied.  Talk, say stop or laugh it off.  Tell a grown up.  Walk away and ignore the bully.  Buddy up, find a friend to be with.

Finally, a leveled reader was sent home.  These books are chosen to match your child's reading level. Your child should read the book a few times, until it can be read with no help.  Tomorrow, I will send home another.  LIBRARY books will also be sent home.  You may have to help your child read those and that is great.  The library is all about student choice.  Leveled books are about gaining confidence and independence.  Happy Reading!!!

Monday

The class did a beautiful job singing and ringing yesterday.  The Servant Song is such a good one to remember as we put others in front our ourselves, like Christ did for us!

We kicked of "Christian Friendship Week" at FLS.  This morning the 8th graders presented skits.  We saw, heard and discussed how we can be better friends (not bullies) and help those (being bullied) who need our help.

Our Bible story was Jacob's Dream, 7B.  The Memory Treasure a a bit longer, but I know with practice my students can do it.  Each student circled the part of the 8th Comm. they are to know by tomorrow.

Math:  We will practice the doubles all week.  Can't wait to do our new math stations tomorrow.  27B is due Tues!

Superkids:  We started unit 3.  Some kids still had trouble will Unit 2 words.  Those kids practiced more today.  Our new words have the -ng ending and -le ending.

Science:  We reviewed animal groups and read about how animals grow and change.

Mrs. Guell had a special announcement for the class this am.  She brought treats to celebrate, too. Ask about it.

Friday!

Grand Day was very special!  It was a treat to meet so many Grands today.  The first grade did sing our song, The Servant Song, as an intro to the event.  Mr.  H led us in a devotion.  We are grateful for a "Hands On" school.  Our Savior put his hands on the cross and washed our sin away.  He opened his hands and said, "Let the little children come to me."  What a blessing to lead children to their Savior daily here at Faith.  We also sang "I Believe" as a whole school.  Wow!  Finally, we all sang a fun Gram and Gramps song.

The group divided for Reader's Theatre and Card Bingo.  It was a delight to watch the family groups read and perform their short "plays."  Ask about the one your family did and others they heard.  Look for more Reader's Theatre in first grade.  Mrs. Guell took pictures for me.  I will be sure to get a picture in their journals.

THANK YOU for send snacks.   They were enjoyed during Card Bingo.

We sing in late church Sunday.  Meet in my room at 10:15.   The kids will sit with you and come up to the front when announced.

Our secretary,  Shari Zunker, said that St. Frances called and told us how much they appreciated having us sing for them.  :)

Have a wonderful weekend.
